Friends ask me all the time for thrillers that won’t keep them up at night, or mysteries that don’t have any actual murders (or, you know, bad guys only). And while my personal scare meter may be fairly deranged at this point, I promise—this list is well-protected against the real nightmare material.
These books all have good mystery, a little suspense, and just the right amount of thrill—without veering into murder-y territory. One of them is about a woman digging into her mother’s past as an example. Every last one had. me. hooked.
